Description:

Central Asia, Nepal, ca. 18th century CE. A hand-carved, heavy and smooth blackstone carving of a Hindu deity. The figure stands, holding some kind of staff topped with a mace head over one shoulder and, in another hand, holding what appears to be a severed human head. The deities two other arms are raised and hold other implements, one of which looks like a curved dagger. This deity may be Kali, who is often portrayed with four arms and with severed heads. Size: 3.4" W x 6" H (8.6 cm x 15.2 cm)

Most Hindu deities are believed to be the embodiment of beauty, with sculpted figures and fine facial features. Images like this one are made as idealized forms and with symbolism and meaning that would have been readily apparent to the audience it was made for. They were carved to adorn private family shrines and altars as well as temples.
