Latin America, Mexico, ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A stunning Spanish Colonial double-sided relicuario (reliquary) comprised of two paintings under bubble glass and a beautiful gilded silver filagree original colonial case with a loop at the top. One of the paintings depicts "Nuestra Senora del Refugio de Pecadores" (Our Lady, Refuge of Sinners), an elegant Madonna and Child rendering on what is known as vegetable ivory, also known as the tagua nut, which comes from the Phytelephas palm native to the tropical rainforest of Ecuador. The other depicts Christ wearing a crown of thorns. A beatiful piece. Size: 2" W x 3" H (5.1 cm x 7.6 cm)
