Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Madura Island off NE coast of Java, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. Wooden kris (keris) handle with elaborate carvings of floral pattern (Maruda), with upper knob emerging from series of angular petals below, original pigments remaining especially near lower section. It is possible that the iconography of this piece is "hiding" the identity of a mythological being. With the conversion to Islam, any explicit references were regarded as idolatry and condemned. Size: 3.5"H x 2"W + custom stand.

Provenance: Ex-private collection of the late Ami Brown, foremost Israeli art collector and founder of Coca Cola Israel.
