Description:

East Asia, Japan, probably Fukuoka, middle Edo period, ca. 18th century CE. A beautiful piriform vessel, used for storing sake, made from a famous type of earthenware pottery known as Takatori ware (also Takatori-yaki). The broad vessel features a gently tapered body and a cylindrical neck topped with a thick rim meant to house a stopper. The hallmark of Takatori ware is the wide variety of glaze colors that can be applied to the surfaces, in this case a caramel-brown glaze with a cream-hued section outlined with faint blue-gray hues across areas of the neck and shoulder. Size: 6" W x 9.875" H (15.2 cm x 25.1 cm)
