East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. late 18th to mid 19th century CE. Fascinating and well used box-wood Netsuke featuring a person with widely opened mouth, possibly skeletal in nature, holding onto a small creature at his feet. The piece has developed a deep, lovely patina from the oils of the hands that have handled this over the 100+ years. Size: 1.625" W x 2.375" H (4.1 cm x 6 cm)
