Japan, Edo Period, 18th century CE. Lovely stoneware tea caddy (chaire) with turned ivory lid. Decorated with orange/brown ash glaze (Raku technique) with combed lines around the body, short rim and ivory lid. This type of tea caddy was used in the very serious Japanese tea ceremony which was a major production carrying great significance. Size: 4.5" H (11.4 cm). Please note: due to new laws governing the sale of ivory, this cannot ship internationally, nor to California, New York, New Jersey or Hawaii.
