Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo Period, scroll entitled "In Praise of the Wish-fulfilling Jewel" by Tenkai (Japanese, 1730 to 1819). A beautiful scroll by Tenkai, a Buddhist monk of the Pure Land sect who was also an advisor to the Shokugawa shogun. The characters of Tenkai can be found in both the signature and one seal. As the title of the scroll describes, the composition features an elegant depiction of a wish granting jewel or hoju, shaped like an orb with a flaming nimbus atop. In Japan this sacred jewel is believed to bring about blessings to suffering people by pacifying desires, engendering a clear understanding of Buddhist law or Dharma, and granting wishes. A lovely work with fine calligraphy and ink drawing on handmade paper. Size: 70.25" L x 17.5" W (178.4 cm x 44.4 cm); 19.5" W (49.5 cm) including dowels
