Lot 67D

East Asia, Japan, Edo era, 18th century CE. A large lacquered wooden carving of a seated Amitabha Buddha (Amida Nyorai), adorned with gilding of 75% to 80.5% gold purity (equivalent to 18K to 19K+), adding a captivating brilliance. The figure is meticulously crafted from many carved wooden pieces, joined to create a cohesive appearance. The Buddha is seated atop an elaborate pedestal adorned with lotus petals, depicted in deep meditation with hands forming the meditation mudra. The serene expression is brought to life by downcast eyes inlaid with glass, featuring brown irises and black pupils. A finely drawn linear mustache frames the lips, while a pink quartz cabochon adorns the ushnisha (topknot), and a translucent quartz stone is embedded in the brow as the third eye. The halo is inscribed with three Sanskrit syllables, representing the Amida Triad: Amida accompanied by the Bodhisattvas Kannon and Seishi. Size: 14" L x 12" W x 24.3" H (35.6 cm x 30.5 cm x 61.7 cm); gold quality: 75% to 80.5% (equivalent to 18K to 19K+)
Amitabha, known in Japan as Amida Nyorai, is revered as the Buddha of Limitless Light, who presides over the Western Paradise. Devotees believed that by sincerely reciting his name, they would achieve salvation and be guided to his resplendent paradise after death by a host of divine beings. This sect of Buddhism was widely embraced in Japan, leading to the establishment of numerous temples dedicated to Amida Nyorai. This statue may have originally resided in a temple, a shrine, or perhaps the personal altar of an elite household during the Edo era.
