Description:

East Asia, Japan, Edo period, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A lovely Buddha seated on a tall pedestal ornately carved into tiers with lotus petals cupping the tranquil Amitabha (Amida), the Buddha of limitless light. He sits with his hands in the Dhyana mudra, the gesture of meditation, robes cascading with naturalistic creases and pleats. Set in his brow is a polished cabochon to represent an Urna or third eye, and a pink cabochon is set in his topknot ushnisha. A piece like this would have been produced by a master craftsman in a workshop and sold to the public or put into a shrine or temple to worship the Pure Land or Amidism doctrine, a branch of Buddhism that focused on rebirth and the Amitabha Buddha’s divine compassion. The level of carved detail on both Buddha and base is impressive! Size: 8" L x 6" W x 13.5" H (20.3 cm x 15.2 cm x 34.3 cm)
