Description:

Europe, Italy, Rococo period, ca. late 18th century CE. A large wooden cherub (also known as a putto) covered with a thin layer of gesso and painted a deep, almost golden brown color that sparkles in places. The cherub is dramatically depicted, with a thoughtful expression on its childish face, wide, staring eyes, and a circle of curling, wavy hair. It is posed dynamically, head turned towards the viewer and body turned silghtly away, arms raised, as if it was once holding something large. A red and gold cloth is wrapped around its lower body. Rococo art centered around carefree, fantastic scenes, often featuring aristocrats. Cherubs were included in this artistic style to give it a touch of whimsy and romance. Size: 16.5" W x 7.6" H (41.9 cm x 19.3 cm)
