Western Europe, Italy, Neoclassical Period, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A beautiful marble fountain mount of an elegant, abstract form resembling a cartouche with scrolling volutes adorning the periphery and a scallop shell emerging from the top. The annular hole for the waterspout presents between 2 volutes near the base. The scallop shell may be simply a reference to the sea and water but is also a common symbol of Venus - Greek Aphrodite - who was born already in adult-form from sea foam. In theology, she is additionally associated with water, as an aspect of the female principle, hence the reference to her in the iconography of this fountain. Size: 14.1" W x 25" H (35.8 cm x 63.5 cm)
