**First Time At Auction**

Europe, Italy, Rome, Giovanni Battista Piranesi (Italian, 1720-1778) "Ciesa e Monastero de S. Maria Annunziato delle fuore Domenicane Neofite" etching on paper, ca. 1750 CE. A wonderful veduta by Piranesi who was by all accounts one of the greatest printmakers of the 18th century. Son of a stonemason and master builder, Piranesi was trained in structural and hydraulic engineering by his uncle, had a strong background in perspective construction and stage design, and self-identified as an architect. While he had limited success winning architectural commissions, his training and passion for classical architecture served him well. Etching provided Piranesi with a healthy livelihood, allowing him to turn one of his favorite pastimes, drawing Roman architecture, into a lucrative source of income. By 1747, Piranesi had begun the work for which he is best known, the "Vedute di Roma" (Views of Rome) and created plates for the series until his death in 1778. Size: 9" L x 13.625" W (22.9 cm x 34.6 cm); sheet 11.875" L x 16.625" W (30.2 cm x 42.2 cm)

Piranesi’s popular Vedute (detailed cityscapes and scenes) replaced previous (and perhaps more accurate) views of Roman landmarks with dynamic compositions, bold lighting effects, and dramatic presentation. Piranesi's etchings influenced European conceptions to such an extent that Goethe, who had learned about Rome through Piranesi’s prints, was purportedly disappointed when faced with views of the actual city for the first time.
