Indonesia, ca. 18th century CE. A carved wood kris (keris) handle in the form of a man practicing some self-love. He sits perched on the guard of the handle, nude, with his features and body carved in a naturalistic pose. Kris, a short-bladed weapon, were worn every day and in special ceremonies; both men and women wore them. They were passed down through families, and used for display, as talismans with magical powers, and weapons, and as heirlooms, as accessories for ceremonial dress, and indicators of social status. Comes with custom stand. Size: 1.75" W x 5.05" H (4.4 cm x 12.8 cm); height on stand: 6.5" (16.5 cm).
