Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A cast-bronze signal cannon called a lantaka (also rentaka) meant to be mounted on or within merchant vessels and warships. This slender example features a flared muzzle rim with a tail-shaped suspension loop behind, a pair of abstract dragon sights above the 2 lateral trunnions, a raised flower in front of the fuse hole, and a baluster-shaped knob on the verso. Swivel guns like this example were created in a variety of sizes depending on the vessel on which it would be mounted and were used as both signaling devices and artillery cannons. The name lantaka is derived from the Malay word 'lantak,' meaning "hammering down" or "ramming down" in reference to the muzzle-loading firing method. Size: 13.6" L x 2.875" W (34.5 cm x 7.3 cm); (bore): 0.55" W (1.4 cm)
