Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Sumatra, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A very rare and attractive carved marine ivory kris (keris) handle in the form of a jawa demam - a half bird, half human deity, most likely a Garuda in a squatting pose holding its sides as if it is shivering from a fever. In fact, Demam means fever in Bahasa. This example is quite abstract with an almost cubist presence. Adding to its allure is the contrast between smooth shiny surfaces and those covered with floral and leaf motifs. Custom stand. For a similar example, see David van Duuren, The Kris: An Earthly Approach to a Cosmic Symbol. Netherlands: Pictures Publishers, 1998, p. 55. Size: 2.5" W x 3" H (6.4 cm x 7.6 cm)
