India, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A large, polished stone sculpture of Krishna, standing on a square, integral base, with fine incised details. He stands with his feet posed like he is dancing - a common depiction of the god as a young man - holding a flute (the flute is sadly missing). His face is sensitive and his arms posed with fine details; he has large earrings which are pierced through, suggesting that at one point they may have had rings made of gold or something else precious. Size: 3.75" L x 5.25" W x 13.6" H (9.5 cm x 13.3 cm x 34.5 cm)
The story of the young Krishna playing his flute comes from the Bhagavata Purana. In this epic, Krishna plays the flute to preserve dharma while defeating demons. This particular story has inspired countless theatre and dance performances in India. Interestingly, this was also the first Purana to be translated into a European language - a French translation appeared in 1788 - and introduced Hinduism to the Western world.
