Description:

New World, Bolivia, Spanish Colonial period, ca. late 18th century CE. A large and impressive wooden panel from an altar niche, hand-carved with twenty inset panels, each with an identical, stylized floral pattern in relief. The back is undecorated, and gives a clear view of how the panel was put together, with reinforcing slats and a wooden border. Between each panel is a low, raised border with leaf-like patterns and round bosses at the corner of each panel junction. At one time it seems to have been painted a solid, bright red, but the color has faded and worn, and now it has a wonderfully aged appearance with some of the color and grain of the wood showing through. This would make a gorgeous decorative element, room divider, or head board for fans of Spanish Colonial art. Size: 1.75" L x 34.5" W x 67.5" H (4.4 cm x 87.6 cm x 171.4 cm)

The floral motifs so prevalent in Spanish Colonial art seem to have been inspired by the Spanish Empire's global reach: some scholars argue that they were influenced by the goods coming from Asian weavings, in particular textiles exported by the East India Company. Although this was a time of internal dissent in Spanish Bolivia, with the educated members of colonial society becoming influenced by Enlightenment ideals about personal freedom and seeking to overthrow their Spanish masters, it was also a time of elite artistic production, especially for items like this one, which were made for worship in the Catholic Church.
