Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, ca. 18th century or earlier CE. An impressive and large mortar carved from a porous volcanic stone. The mortar rests on a rounded base with a small indentation in the center. Tall, thick walls rise up with two shallow grooves encircling the exterior near the base and the midsection. The interior basin is shallow and slightly conical in shape from use, with a smooth surface near the bottom from pounding. This mortar would have been used with a wooden or stone pestle to make traditional medicines or to grind dye or food. Size: 7.64" Diameter x 7.375" H (19.4 cm x 18.7 cm)
