Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Oahu, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A hand-carved lava stone mortar exhibiting dark gray hues and a cylindrical form. The vessel rests upon a round but stable foot and has a protruding ring around the lower body. The deep basin was intended to hold copious amounts of medicinal herbs meant for making herbal remedies; the smooth interior surfaces suggest repeated use. While medicine was a common use for mortars like this example, other uses - typically with the aid of a wooden or stone pestle - included food preparation and dye grinding. Size: 5.9" W x 7" H (15 cm x 17.8 cm)
