Description:

Europe, France, Provence, Regence style, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. An impressively large and decorative iron door knocker from the era of the post-Louis XIV French Regency (1715-1823). The Regence style frowned upon the strict formality and flamboyant ornateness of the infamous Sun King and his palace of Versailles. Instead, elegant luxury was conveyed with graceful curves, furniture with cabriole legs, and shells, leaf, and floral ornament. This door knocker captures the basic tenets of the Regence style - somewhat lavish yet gracefully elegant, fit for a ruler, yet not grotesquely grandiose. Quite an impressive example! Size: knocker mounted on wood measures 23-3/4" x 15"; knocker itself measures 19" x 13"
