Western Europe, France, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A mortar of sturdy form that is hand-carved from white marble with integral gray veining. The flat-bottomed vessel features an inverted conical body, a thick rim, and 4 thick lugs spaced equidistantly around the circumference. The deep basin bears smooth surfaces indicative of heavy usage and suggests this mortar was perhaps used in a personal home or an apothecary for preparing medicinal ingredients.
