Western Europe, France, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A gorgeous inlaid wood grandfather or comtoise (Mobier) clock classically inspired by the glory of King Louis XVI, the "Sun King." The bonnet top contains an enamel dial face plaque inscribed "Joseph Grasset / A. Romont" and a brass Louis XIV's sunburst motif, the side doors open to reveal the inner movement mechanism behind the dial face. The front door inlaid with contrasting wood triangles into a compass rose, and a small window below to see the brass pendulum. This clock will add a touch of elegance to any interior - whether provincial cottage or Versailles palace! Size: 16" L x 9" W x 81" H (40.6 cm x 22.9 cm x 205.7 cm)

Louis XVI style dominated French decorative arts, architecture, and furniture in France during Louis XVI's 19-year reign (1774-1793) prior to the French Revolution. This style bridged the final phase of the French Baroque style and the dawn of French Neoclassicism. Its relatively spare ornamentation was a response to the rather excessive ornamentation of the Baroque/Rococo period.
