Description:

Western Europe, French, ca. 18th Century CE. A brass mortar with a cylindrical body that flares to a wider rim and sits upon a flat flared foot. Surrounding each handle engraved on the exterior walls is a geometric design. Above the base and below the rim are fine line striations. The pestle has knobbed ends and the middle of the shaft has a rib. Mortars and pestles such as this were used primarily for grinding up ingredients for medicinal purposes. Solid brass, a wonderful example of European craftmanship. Size: 6.25" W x 7.5" H (15.9 cm x 19 cm)
