Description:

Europe, France, Aubusson, ca. 1750 CE. A French antique, handwoven classic verdure (greenery) tapestry created in the weaving town of Aubusson, and likely commissioned by the aristocracy. The composition includes a magnificent exotic pink bird standing amidst flowering foliage between a pair of tall trees to indicate the wooded environs with a river beyond, quaint chateaux buildings in the middle distance, and hillsides beyond to create depth and perspective. It is a wonderful scene delineated in a myriad of hues: cobalt, sky, and navy blue; buttercup, gold, and sunflower yellow; petal pink, peach, rose, orange, and burgundy; and more. Size: 75.5" L x 47" W (191.8 cm x 119.4 cm)

The creation of Aubusson tapestries was traditionally carried out by intimate family workshops organized into guilds. Among the most popular Aubusson tapestries were the verdures and other pastoral rural landscapes. The skill required to create these weavings was passed down from generation to generation. In time, the weaving industry earned a great reputation, particularly as they gained the attention of aristocratic clientele, and the town of Aubusson was granted the title of Royal Manufactory in 1665, akin to the Beauvais and Gobelins Workshops.
