**First Time At Auction**

Northern Europe, England or Flanders, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A handsome trio of ceramic tiles, glazed with polychrome hues of red and yellow. Two are similarly adorned with a stylized rampant lion in the center with linear shapes along the peripheries. The fleur de lis in the corners are representative of the Prince of Whales heraldic badge. The smaller tile has diamond motifs with circular dots. The rampart lion was a popular motif, and these tiles originally were used to decorate fireplaces as well as floors and walls. Size (rampart lions): 6" L x 6" W (15.2 cm x 15.2 cm); (smaller tile): 5.125" L x 5.125" W (13 cm x 13 cm)

  • Condition: Surface abrasions, pitting, discoloration. Nicks and chips to peripheries of all. Smaller tile has old repair with stable hairline fissures and losses to verso. Nice craquelure to glaze!
