Western Europe, probably Italy, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. An adorable, hand-carved wood head of a winged cherub executed in high relief and embellished in painted pigments atop gesso. Turning slightly right, the chubby-cheeked angel displays arched brows above slender eyes, an up-turned nose, and fleshy lips, all crowned by a coiled coiffure of luscious locks. Plumed wings spread out from the child's head, framing his youthful visage. Size: 16.6" W x 6.9" H (42.2 cm x 17.5 cm)

Provenance: private Rancho Mirage, California, USA collection, by inheritance in 2020; ex-Dr. TDR Berreth, California, USA, acquired before 1982

  • Condition: Professional repair to proper left wing with some minor chipping along break line and professional repair with possible restoration to tips of feathers on right wing. A few stable fissures to head, as well as chipping to raised areas. Expected nicks and abrasions, as well as old, inactive insect holes. Nice remaining pigments and rich patina. Suspension loop and wire on verso for easy display.
