Description:

Europe, possibly Spain, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A beautiful example of a plug bayonet, an early bayonet type especially used in Spain. The steel blade is gorgeous, with openwork in several places, inset brass details and fine incised decorative elements on the face of the blade. A brass and polished wood handle give it a dagger-like appearance when not attached to a rifle. Size of bayonet: 2.5" W x 14.5" H (6.4 cm x 36.8 cm); size on stand: 4" W x 15.5" H (10.2 cm x 39.4 cm)

The sheath of this example is brass tipped at both ends and has green fabric over newsprint forming the majority of its body. We believe plug bayonets originated as a hunting weapon, so that if a shot was inaccurate, the animal could be fended off using this. They were designed to slide directly into the musket barrel and were used in battles to convert light infantry to heavy infantry and to hold off cavalry charges.
