Description:

European, 18th to 19th century. Signature at lower right. A charming painting of an adorable little girl sitting with her pet goat She gazes endearingly at the viewer with her big brown eyes - a sweet visage of innocence crowned by golden curls. During the 18th century, Europeans began to think about children as inherently good - beloved for their innocence and playfulness - and animals were valued as pets rather than mere beasts of labor. This way of thinking was largely due to the writings of French philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1712–78) who argued that childhood was an age of innocence, and revered artists such as Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) and Thomas Gainsborough (1727-1788) featured pets in portraits of children in response to this newfound cult of childhood. A beautiful painting mounted in a custom frame. Size (sight view): 13.125" L x 10.25" W (33.3 cm x 26 cm) Size (frame): 20.8" L x 17.75" W (52.8 cm x 45.1 cm) Please Note: Pigments of this painting have been tested via x-ray florescence and are consistent with the period.
