Description:

Europe, Italy or Spain, ca. 18th century CE. A hand carved 18th century figure of Jesus Christ in the crucifixion position, polychromed with a dramatic palette of red, white, and black. The sculpture brilliantly captures the drama and sorrow of the tragic crucifixion in graphic detail, with blood dripping over the body and stigmata through the feet. The visage with closed eyes is at once tranquil yet somber. This example recalls the realism that emerged in 17th century Spanish religious sculptures and paintings. Such realism was purposefully sought in order to combat Protestantism and revitalize the Catholic Church. Artists aimed to create vivid and naturalistic imagery that was at the same time dramatically emotive, soulful, and gruesomely graphic. The sculptors' stylings paralleled those of painters Diego Velazquez and Francisco de Zurburan. Size: 8.5" H (21.6 cm)
