Description:

Europe, Italy or France, Neoclassical, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A stunning pair of cast brass urns with classically-inspired scenes finely rendered in relief. The vessels sit upon pedestal feet and are comprised of inverted piriform bodies with cylindrical necks rising to flared mouths. Two upturned handles on the shoulders rise out from the heads of two women and emerge from the sides of the urns. Classically garbed figures adorn the exterior walls. A cloaked man walks below one handle, and another man leans on a walking stick beneath the other handle. In the center on both sides is a helmeted soldier standing over a bearded man on the ground below. These urns make a beautiful pair with iconography inspired by antiquity, so coveted during the Neoclassical era! Size: 8.5" in diameter x 13" H (21.6 cm x 33 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection, purchased in the 1970s; ex-Rothschilds Gallery, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
