Description:

Western Europe, France or England, Georgian era, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A pretty snuff box made from pressed and engine turned tortoiseshell, and gilt-brass. The 38% to 39% (equivalent to 9K+) gold thumbpiece is a chased scroll that opens to reveal the interior gilt-brass rim fitting. The lid has an intricate scrolling floral chinoiserie motif formed by pressing, and the underside and edges have a dynamic wavy linear motif - this tiny and precise raised and recessed patterning was achieved by engine turning. Size: 3" L x 1.65" W x 0.75" H (7.6 cm x 4.2 cm x 1.9 cm); metal quality: 38% to 39% (equivalent to 9K+) gold; 51% to 53% copper

Several states and countries prohibit the importation of materials from endangered species, including tortoise shell / sea turtle shell. Please check your country's laws before bidding on this piece. We guarantee that the piece was made prior to 1973.
