Description:

Europe, possibly Spain, ca. 18th to 19th century. A skillfully hand-embroidered silk composition of a double-headed eagle, a powerful and ancient symbol that appears in many cultures and as early as the Bronze Age. In the context of the Roman and Byzantine empire, the two heads represent looking towards the East and West, signifying complete control and unification between the two parts of the empire. This composition is delineated in beautiful golden, azure blue, taupe, and sage green threads. The piece bears an inscription around the peripheries, including "FE" on top "PE" on left proper side and "S" on the right proper side, and is set in a lovely frame. Size (textile): 5.3" L x 4" W (13.5 cm x 10.2 cm); (frame): 8" L x 6.25" W (20.3 cm x 15.9 cm)
