Description:

Northern Europe, probably United Kingdom, Gothic Revival period, ca. late 18th to 19th century CE. A lovely example of a Gothic Revival or Neo-Gothic architectural feature, this is a carved sandstone panel with a cross set into a circular border at its center, extensive Celtic knot decoration, and six round openings. It is carved on one face and left undecorated on the other. Given this, it was likely placed in a wall where its reverse could not be seen, perhaps high up on a wall. The dense profusion of knotwork gives the viewer the impression of seeing a surface covered in vines. Panels like this one grace churches, grand houses, and university architecture from this period, as the leading artists and architects of these edifices gazed back to the medieval period for inspiration. Size: 6.25" L x 23.75" W x 23.75" H (15.9 cm x 60.3 cm x 60.3 cm)
