Description:

Europe, France, Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur (French, 1757-1810 CE), ca. late 18th to early 19th century, probably 1784 CE. Eight hand-colored engravings with clear plate marks, each depicting different traditional costumes and taken from the pages of a book. Each one is lively and detailed, and they would look excellent framed together or separately and displayed. They represent a wide range of people: a dancer from Loango (modern day western Republic of the Congo), a woman from Arabia, an Indian priest, a Sami woman, the bourgeosie of St. Petersburg, a guard to a prince in a tropical land, an Indian peasant man, and a peasant woman from Kamchatka. Size of largest (all are of similar size): 7.9" W x 10.4" H (20.1 cm x 26.4 cm)

Jacques Grasset de Saint-Sauveur was born in Montreal during its final years as a French colony, and he left to study in Paris as a child in 1764. He became a diplomat and was stationed in Hungary and Cairo. He also published nearly twenty books, many that he illustrated. These plates are most likely from Costumes Civils de tous Les Peuples Connus (with Sylvain Marechal), published in 1784, whose full text can be accessed here: https://archive.org/details/costumescivilsac02gras

The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) has a collection of many of the plates from this series: http://collections.lacma.org/node/168762
