Description:

Northern Europe, England, ca. 18th century CE. A fine example of English delftware! A tin-glazed ceramic dish or charger painted in the traditional hues of blue and white and depicting the bust of a young male royal. Perhaps a prince, the figure gazes forward, his visage depicted with only a few brushstrokes, granting him a stoic presentation, all surmounted by a short, flared coiffure and a towering crown of clover-shaped spikes. English delftware pottery and its painted decoration is similar in many respects to that from Holland, but its peculiarly English quality has been commented upon: "...there is a relaxed tone and a sprightliness which is preserved throughout the history of English delftware; the overriding mood is provincial and naïve rather than urbane and sophisticated." Size: 8" Diameter x 1.1" H (20.3 cm x 2.8 cm)
