Description:

Northern Europe, The Netherlands, Amsterdam ca. late 18th to early 19th century CE. A beautiful knife, with a gilt dog (47% gold and 35.5% silver) surmounted on a silver handle (95% silver), and a steel blade with a spade shaped hallmark. The handle is engraved with Christian themes; on one side an angel leads a man with a serpentine tail towards a city. The other side features a seated man and a winged creature or angel coming from the sky with the same cityscape in the background. The edges of the handle are adorned with stylized foliate patterns. Knives such as this fine example are known as "pistol knives" because the pommel is slightly downturned and rounded, like the butt of a gun. This petite blade may have been a letter opener. Size: 6.375" L x .5" W (16.2 cm x 1.3 cm); quality of silver: 35.5% to 95%; quality of gilt: 47% (equivalent to 11K+); total weight: 21.1 grams
