Description:

Northern Europe, Holland (the Netherlands), ca. mid 18th century CE. A delightful tin-glazed jar used for storing tobacco with a thin cast bronze lid. The body is in the form of an inverted pear, with a flat base and a wide opening. The small rim rolls outward and slightly down. The jar is decorated with a bright blue-on-white, one side painted with a scrolled, floral cartouche. In the center, written in neat capital letters, is, "PONPADOER." Similar vessels bear names like "VIRGINIA" or "DUNKERKER," suggesting that this is a place name, perhaps relating to a bridge with the Latin root "pon." These jars were used for storing tobacco. Size: 6.5" W x 11.6" H (16.5 cm x 29.5 cm)

Provenance: private collection of Lupita Tovar, silent screen actress of the 1930s, Bel-Air, California, USA
