Description:

Indonesia, Borneo, Central Kalimantan, Dayak peoples, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A tall, hand-carved wooden guardian figure from a culture with an esteemed tradition of wood carving. The figure has a long, skull-like face, with huge, round, sunken eye sockets. A squared-off coiffure is behind the head, carved to end at the neck. The body is slender, with a very narrow waist and wider torso and hips. His arms are curved upward, pressed against his chest, with his palms cupped outward underneath the chin. Carvers in this culture were generally men, and skill in carving was a token of refinement that would indicate that the man was ready for marriage. Size: 4.35" W x 24.15" H (11 cm x 61.3 cm); 26.5" H (67.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Accompanied by a radiocarbon dating report from Rafter Radiocarbon, New Zealand.
