Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A beautifully preserved example of a tengpai (also teng pai), a Chinese woven rattan shield, its surface painted with a black tripartite motif. The back features a curved bamboo handle and a woven rattan loop to be used as a strap. The rattan shield was used in China since the Ming Dynasty, as well as in neighboring Korea since the Joseon Dynasty (and is still used today in some martial arts). Size: 19.35" diameter (49.1 cm)
