Description:

China, Qing Dynasty, 18th century CE. An ornate, brightly painted wooden sculpture of a seated Emperor. He wears red robes with a wonderfully detailed decoration style and is seated upon a large red throne with the heads of ferocious beasts - dragons or lions? - on the armrests. The figure was once gilded and the remains of gilding are visible in some areas, especially lower on the robe. Size: 7.2" W x 13.1" H (18.3 cm x 33.3 cm)

Many craftsmen during the Qing Dynasty worked in the imperial court, which had specialized workshops for master craftsmen and the skilled workers who were under them. Chinese artwork during this time was a worldwide style, with European artists imitating it heavily for the style known as chinoiserie.
