Description:

East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A beautiful brush pot, skillfully carved from Chinese rosewood, also known as Huanghuali, which translates to "yellow flowering pear." The elegant vessel features thick, slightly concave walls that rise to a circular rim, all sitting upon a planar base, carved from a separate piece of wood, and inserted into the bottom. Smoothly sculpted, the walls boast a gorgeous natural woodgrain of deep auburn with lovely mocha-hued striations that highlight its graceful form. Brush pots, like this example, were traditionally used by scribes for holding calligraphy brushes. Size: 8" in diameter x 9" H (20.3 cm x 22.9 cm)

A similar piece of smaller form was sold by Christie's London as lot 742 during the "Christie's Interiors" auction (Live auction 8791) on May 14th, 2013 for 1,875 pounds (equivalent to about $2,642.40).
