**First Time At Auction**

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A lovely carved wood sculpture of a Buddhist monk in a devotional pose, kneeling upon a lotus flower, the remain of the stem protruding downward. This praying monk was likely displayed in conjunction with a large statue of the Buddha in a temple or shrine. The surface has a lovely aged and weathered patina from over the ages. Size: 8" L x 3.25" W (20.3 cm x 8.3 cm); 9.5" H (24.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii collection, acquired 2000 to 2010

  • Condition: Figure is perhaps a fragment from a larger piece, with old break to lotus stem. Stable pressure fissure on top of head. Abrasions and chips to petals and shoulder / arm of figure. Losses to pigment and dark surface patina.
