Burma, late 18th century CE. This is a cast bronze Buddha seated in the lotus position with two small praying monks at his feet. The Buddha is decorated with jewels on his sash and at the bottom of his robes. He is a Burmese Lotus Buddha, who is seated in the lotus position with an inversted lotus blossom atop his head and ushnisha. He has two small praying monks projected in front of him. Buddhas are always depicted in different mudras, or poses, that represent historical moments in the Buddha's life, forms of meditation, or a symbolic combination of both. This Buddha is depicted in the Bhumisparsha mudra, with his right hand over the right knee reaching towards the ground and the palm inward and touching the lotus throne. His left hand lies in his lap with the palm upright. This mudra represents the moment of his awakening, as he defeated the demon Mara, and claimed the earth as his witness to his enlightenment. The facial details and patina on this piece are highlights. Size: 24" H x 16" W x 11" L (61 cm x 41 cm x 28 cm).

- Condition: The piece is intact with some sufrace pitting and a deep bronze patina. All the artwork details are clear, although a few of the jewels are missing. The monks are detachable.
