Description:

Southeast Asia, Burma (Myanmar), ca. 18th century CE. Dried lacquer torso of Buddha shown with his right hand pointing toward the ground in the Bhumisparsha or Calling Earth to Witness mudra and the other open before him in the dhyana or meditation mudra. Painted a deep hue of crimson with copper-colored details, the tranquil figure presents downcast eyes beneath dramatically arched brows, a naturalistic nose, and a subtle smile, all flanked by a pair of long-lobed ears, symbolic of his asceticism. A tightly coiled coiffure crowns his head, surmounted by a wooden ushnisha. Size (from base to top): 15.5" L x 14" W x 30.75" H (39.4 cm x 35.6 cm x 78.1 cm); (from fingertips to top): 37.75" H (95.9 cm). **PLEASE NOTE: Marble column not included, but available for purchase separately**

The Buddha displays the Calling Earth to Witness mudra, also known as Subduing Mara or Bhumisparsa representing the moment just prior to enlightenment, with the Buddha sitting in meditation, his left hand in his lap with palm upright, and his right hand palm downward touching the earth. At the moment just before Siddhartha Gautama attained enlightenment, the demon Mara viciously attacked him with his troops of monsters attempting to scare him away from his seat under the bodhi tree. However, the Buddha-to-be remained. Mara claimed that his spiritual deeds were greater than Siddhartha's challenging the Buddha-to-be. Then Siddhartha extended his right hand to touch the earth, Mara disappeared, and Siddhartha achieved enlightenment.
