Description:

Southeast Asia, Bhutan, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A quite large bronze Buddha in a meditating pose. A spiritual image of Buddha portrayed seated in the 'Virasana' pose, one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands are positioned in mudra, with the left hand resting palm open on his lap, while the right hand forms the Shuni mudra, or gesture for patience. Size: 22" W x 35" H (55.9 cm x 88.9 cm)

The Buddha is modeled with broad shoulders, an inflated chest, and a narrow waist, wearing a long sanghati robe in the 'Open Mode,' draped diagonally over the left shoulder and leaving the right shoulder and breast uncovered. The end of the fold is draped to his midsection, forming a fish-tail notch. The somewhat elongated head features an ovoid face, with outlined curls that dip into the middle of the forehead. The incised eyes, resembling lotus petals, are set beneath arched eyebrows. The Buddha's prominent nose and bow-shaped mouth are accompanied by a faint smile. His elongated earlobes stop short of the shoulders. The head is covered with snail-shell curls, whorled and surmounted by a domed 'Ushnisha,' rising to a tall flame finial. Cast using the lost wax method with a purer bronze (copper) alloy, identifiable by its heavier weight and rich chocolate-brown hue beneath the oxidized patina.

This item has been tested using XRF technology. Results show copper with about 5% of tin and zinc, consistent with bronzes made before the 20th and as early as the 16th century.
