Description:

North America, United States, Eastern Seaboard, ca. 1775 to 1800 CE. A rare hand-forged iron pike head with a folded shaft, tapered blade, three-tiered rounded decorative ornament where the blade insets into the sleeve, and a perforation through shaft for attachment. Pikes were rarely used in infantry formations beyond 1700; however, pikes such as these were used during the Revolutionary War until enough bayonets could be procured for general use by the Continental Army and attached militia units, making this quite a rare piece. Note the rich brown and light green patina enveloping the silvery sheen of the blade and shaft. A remarkable relic from the birth of the United States. Size with Included Custom Stand: 2.25" L x 2" W x 16.5" H (5.7 cm x 5.1 cm x 41.9 cm)

Provenance: ex Estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan USA acquired before 2000
