Native American, Pacific Northwest, Alaskan, ca. 18th century CE. A fine hand-carved stone adze head in natural hues of dark grey and brown. The lovely implement displays a rounded butt, a flat top, and a sharp cutting edge that tapers to a triangular point. The base has two raised peaks that dip in the middle for the head to be tied to a handle. Size: 7.625" L x 2.2" W (19.4 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania collection; ex-MacLeod collection, acquired before 1930

  • Condition: Small area of loss to one side of butt end as shown. Nicks and light pitting to surfaces, with light abrasions and very small chips to blade edge, and light encrustations. Great smoothness to blade edge indicative of use.
