Europe, Italy, Venice, found in western Africa, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A lovely pair of Venetian glass and stone trade bead strands, each strung on modern stringing that can be made into more attractive compositions. The first strand features 59 beads of primarily yellow hues with polychrome eyes as well as 1 lime green bead with blue, white, and red eyes. The longer strand exhibits 16 petite yellow glass beads, 2 large yellow glass beads, 1 spherical brass bead, and 185 russet-hued stone seed beads. Beads like these were used for trading purposes throughout Africa and the New World. Size (red and yellow bead strand): 31.75" L (80.6 cm); (largest bead): 0.77" L x 0.43" W (2 cm x 1.1 cm); (yellow bead strand): 31.5" L (80 cm); (largest bead): 0.76" L x 0.41" W (1.9 cm x 1 cm); (display case): 12.25" L x 8.25" W (31.1 cm x 21 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s

  • Condition: Beads are from the stated period and are strung on modern fiber strands; these are not meant to be worn as necklaces, but can be restrung into more attractive compositions. Minor nicks and abrasions to some beads, otherwise intact and very good. Great preservation to coloration. All are displayed in a modern Riker case.
