Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Near East, Afghanistan, ca. 18th century CE. An absolutely gorgeous hand-built jezail rifle of a characteristically-elongated form. Jezail were typically built by their owners for warfare rather than hunting, their ornate decorations an extension of the builder, with lengthy barrels able to fire upwards of .50 or .75 caliber rounds. This example boasts an octagonal barrel mounted within a toffee-hued wooden forestock, and secured by two hammered brass sheets. The forestock and the back stock are heavily-embellished with dozens of mother-of-pearl inlays, each section separated by thin strips of pinned brass. The iron flintlock mechanism was likely repurposed from a British rifle based on the stamped letters "GB" and the lobed crown above. The mechanism consists of an articulated flint clamp and striking plate, a deep flash pan, and a curved trigger with a surrounding guard. The precursor to the modern long-range sniper rifle, this example of a jezail is one of the most striking firearms we've had the pleasure of presenting! Size: 63" L (160 cm).
