Western Europe, France, Aubusson, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. This gorgeous woven wool tapestry fragment depicts dense flowers and foliage with birds, possibly peacocks or phoenixes. The patterning is likely influenced by Rococo and Chinese art, particularly during the 18th century when European tastes were profoundly shaped by the fascination with East Asian aesthetics, a trend known as Chinoiserie. The six fragments are professionally mounted across three panels on a modern folding room divider screen, with lush velvet cloth and rivets that add elegance to the antique pastoral design. Size of entire screen: 60" L x 1.25" W x 62" H (152.4 cm x 3.2 cm x 157.5 cm); largest tapestry fragments: 39" L x 15" W (99.1 cm x 38.1 cm)

This distinctive tapestry technique originated in the town of Aubusson, France. These tapestries are renowned for their detailed pictorial designs, often depicting pastoral scenes, mythological figures, or ornate floral motifs. Primarily woven from wool, some pieces also incorporate silk for added richness and luster. Aubusson became a hub for tapestry production in the 17th century, when it received official recognition as a tapestry-making center by the French government. Each tapestry is created on a vertical loom, with the design outlined on a full-scale drawing, known as a cartoon, that guides the weaver stitch by stitch. The skill and artistry involved make each piece unique and highly valuable. Today, Aubusson tapestries are prized for their beauty, and mounting fragmentary pieces on a folding screen provides a unique way to preserve and display these works as a cohesive whole.
